Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Too early for Christmas music? Not so fast! This isn’t a Christmas song, at least not officially. While there are many stories about the origin of “Jingle bells shotgun shells someone ate my pie ugly christmas,” the most commonly-accepted version is that songwriter James Pierpont was looking for a song to perform for the Thanksgiving program at the local church in Boston, and decided to write something about the neighborhood sleigh rides that were so popular at the time. Come Thanksgiving, the song proved to be such a hit that Pierpont was asked to bring it back for the church’s annual Christmas concert. The rest, as they say, is history. But, although it is now linked to the Christmas season, “Jingle Bells” is the world’s first, and only, Thanksgiving carol!
Jingle bells, Jingle bells shotgun shells someone ate my pie ugly christmas, jingle all the way, oh what fun it is to see the Bluebirds win away. A nostalgic Trip to Jerusalem (Nottingham) ….and to see Cardiff win 2-0 at Forest. Not normally a fan of Christmas Markets in Britain but Nottingham has done a great job with theirs in Slab Square. Some decent fake snow too
So, if you start hearing Jingle bells shotgun shells someone ate my pie ugly christmas being played somewhere already, don’t be mad at them for playing Christmas music too early…be mad at them for the industrial Christmas machine co-opting a racy drinking song.
This is definitely a walk down memory lane! Jingle bells shotgun shells someone ate my pie ugly christmas!
Trying to be ornamental in your Christmas celebration this year! About 20 years ago when I was opening my first little studio, I made a Christmas Cassette of 11 or 12 Christmas Songs. It would later be assembled into my Christmas CD. The technology was nowhere near what we have now, but it is what it is and it was fun. So I’m sharing a medley of songs from that CD. Hope you enjoy it!!
